Is it true that the Genealogies in the Bible contradict each other?

And if this is true, how can they be accurately used to determine the age of the Earth (According to YECs)?

The “contradictory” genealogies are those which deal with the heritage of Jesus. They follow different paths.

The age of the earth is all over the place, using scriptural references. They range from about 3500 BC to far older. Ussher’s determination is the one favored by most people who believe the earth is about 6,000 years old. Unfortunately, there are problems that have nothing to do with the Bible that aren’t taken into account. That is the accuracy and reliability of our current (Gregorian) and prior (Julian) calendar tracking (not dating, but tracking). You see, we went through a period of time known as the dark ages, and about the only knowledge that managed to make it through that period of our history (as far as Western civilizations — Roman based) are concerned, were the Monks and they were sequestered away in their monasteries. Were they aware of the seasons? Were they aware of anything other than life inside the monastery?

Now you have the added problem of whether you accept the idea that a “day” in Genesis was one 24-hour period, a thousand years, or an indeterminate (and undetermined) amount of time. All fit with the use of the ancient Hebrew word that was translated into “day”. The YEC’s and their fellow believers, ignore the latter definition of the word, which fits with use, even in our time: “Today is the _day_ of man.” The concept of morning and evening have to do with beginning and end of that creative period.

So even from a scriptural point of view, that whole matter becomes one of interpretation. And since the fossil record coincides nicely with the latter definition, I would think that intelligent people would use it. Besides, the story is a blueprint, not the final word on the matter.

As to the appearance of modern man, that is another matter. The fossil record bears witness of homo sapiens (our race) being in existence for some 350,000 years (give or take a few thousand), but historic (archeological) evidence of our particular breed of modern man goes back between six and ten thousand years. And we haven’t changed very much in between. We are still the same squabbling, dysfunction group of humans that we were way back then…
