How could i go about putting together a family tree?

My Dad and his generation have been working on our family tree but they’ve only managed to find the past 100 years of our family.
I’m the eldest female in my generation(I’m 15), I’m also next in line for our inheritance.
Our last name is of Welsh origin but some say it began in France.

In the UK the first 100 years is the hardest because of our laws, then records are open for public view, so it sould be a little easier now….census returns are your next records to look at and many are available ( look on the links)…………….many names that people associate with Wales are not Welsh but English..read surnames in Wales http://familytimeline.webs.com/originsofsurnames.htm so don’t research your family history on your surname in isolation or you will not get very far
